Louisiana is “Punk.” One might ask how can a state, an imagined area be “Punk?” Well, let’s look at the facts. Louisiana: A. hates the federal government, B. is falling apart, and C. hates school. SF Punk legends John Spaw and Dave Craig (The Lowdown) know these facts, and have chosen to infuse their new band, Stella Royale, with the south’s better influences.
French horns, vintage guitar, and gypsy rhythms abound in Cockroach Esemble (Randy Girl Records), Stella Royale’s 3rd full release. It’s return to a basics after their more experimental second album, The Nerves of Them. John Spaw provides the bluesman vocals and punky guitar for the sometimes melancholy album. While Kat Cornelius’s brass and accordion work adds an eclectic color to their overall sound. The subtle yet impactful highlights can be heard on “Dog” which was re-recorded with Cornelius for Cockroach Esemble.
I recently spoke to Mr.Spaw, and I am excited to share Stella Royale has already finished mastering a few tracks for their upcoming, yet to be named, LP. John has promised to send us over a few tracks to share as they wrap things up. While we wait for the package, stream Cockroach Esemble, and others, directly from the artist site below. You can also pick up their first album, Dog, from iTunes and Amazon.-TC
